Graphic novels: the good, the better, the accessible

With the recent resurgence of superheroes in movies, cartoons and videogames, comics are attracting more and more new readers. Unfortunately, the graphic novels that are carried by major booksellers are not always best for beginners. Choosing randomly from popular graphic novels, people run the risk of either picking a book that is too "literary" for the sort of fun, over-the-top plotting and action that put comics on the map, or picking a major cross-over event that is so filled with obscure characters that the uninitiated reader has no hope whatsoever of understanding the story.
