The rain and wind could not stop sophomore attackman Daniel McQuade and sophomore midfielder Sam Russell as the duo guided Whittier's men's lacrosse team (3-0) to victory as they dismantled the Grand Canyon 'Lopes (1-2) in a 15-3 bout on Saturday, Feb. 27.
On Monday March 1, head football coach BJ Hammer and Director of Athletics Robert Coleman announced the hiring of Gregory Schammel as the new offensive coordinator for men's football. He joins the football coaching staff with Hammer, defensive coordinator Kirk Jellerson, defensive backs coach Chasen Eddow and quarterback Coach Riley Bateman.
The Whittier women's lacrosse team gained an early lead over the Tigers and did not give up the advantage for the rest of the game on Saturday, Feb. 27 to win 16-12. The Poets led by four goals a little less than halfway through the first half with a score of 5-1.
The No. 6 Whittier College women's water polo team (2-2) won two of four matches at the Chapman University Tournament on Friday, Feb. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 28. Concordia University at Irvine (7-3), played the Poets for their last game of the tournament. The Eagles dominated the game 13-5 and did not allow Whittier to score until the final minutes of the third quarter.
On Sunday, Feb. 28, the men's tennis team conquered Caltech 9-0 for their fourth win of the season and first of SCIAC play. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 27 but was postponed due to inclement weather. The Poets gave Caltech little chance of winning only giving up four games overall.
First-year Greg Garcia shot even par in Whittier's second SCIAC event, which took place at the par 72 East Valley Country Club on Thursday, Feb. 25. His performance was the third best individual score of the day, but it would not be enough to get his team anymore than fifth place, as his fellow teammates were unable to keep up with his outstanding performance.
On Saturday, Feb. 27, a rainy, cold, and windy, the Poets traveled to the Rossi Relays, a meet hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripts. Due to the foul weather, few teams attended. Even though a fraction of the team was there, there were still several who competed.
The Whittier women's softball team (6-3) had their six game win streak broken by Chapman (5-3) on Thursday, Feb. 25 when the Poets traveled down to Orange, California for a double-header against the non-conference opponent. Chapman took wins in both the games as they stopped the Poets in their tracks with 7-6 and 8-3 wins.
